Strawberry Compost
Today in the garden, I destroyed the strawberry patch.
Strawberry plants are perennials, but after a couple of years they tend to become less productive. This patch was planted about three years ago and this season produced very litte, so out it goes. I’m looking forward to more intentionally selecting the right variety for my goals when I replant in spring. A slower, more consistent production of fruit over a longer season would suit me better.

Of course nothing is wasted, so all of the old plants and the cornflowers I had growing there went straight in to the compost. I am once again filling up all the plastic bins I have so might have to finally cave and put the classic three bay pellet system together.

The bed got topped up with old soil from a potato patch, some compost mixed in, and then mulched with woodchip to keep it nice and moist throughout summer days. It will likely become a bed for leafy greens and carrots soon.

You might have spotted the dahlias off to the side. I planted these several years ago and they keep coming back producing these gorgeous orange flowers.
